In the Gudgel War in 1597 Klaus Fleming, the Lord High Constable of Swedish Empire, ordered to buid some artillery bulwarks on the bank of the river Karvianjoki against rebel farmers near the place where later in 17th century situated a fortress. Some weak marks can still be seen in the area of Kyro Skanssi near the present granaries and bridges.

After the visit it is refreshing to have a nice cup of coffee and a fresh piece of cake in the atmospheric military canteen of Niinisalo, the artillery carrison in the village treasures road's military traditions. Near the canteen the City Museum of Kankaanpaa is proud to present local history and modern fine arts.    
 


The area of Kyronkankaantie offers many possibilities to sport fishers. Rivers and lakes are fishy. Common sorts are northern pike, perch and roach but often zandler, whitefish and trout can be found.
 
The rapids like Lankoski in Merikarvia and Kairokoski in Parkano are popular but also the biggest lakes like Isojarvi in Pomarkku and Karhijarvi in Lavia offer surprising possibilities.

In 1637 - 1640 and 1648 - 1654 Per Brahe the Younger, the Lord High Steward of Swedish Empire, was Governor general in Finland. In this country he reformed the administration, introduced a postal system, founded ten new towns and developed commerce and agriculture.

Brahe worked hard to make roads better. Since 1648 he reguired reparations also by the old road of Kyronkangas, which became an official Post road. It was widened up to 10 cubits and a trench was digged on the both sides.

 

To a rider an excellent way to learn to know the Old road of Kyronkangas is to make expeditions on horseback.

Ín the area situate two riding rings, Niinisalo's Riders in Niinisalo and Kankaanpaa's Riding Center in Vihteljarvi village. The local sand based boreal forest is beautiful in all seasons and here is over 200 km marked stompings to riders. Other places where it is possible to ride are Sammi's Riding Horse Farm, Sammi is one of the road's historical hunting villages, and Luomajarvi's Horse Inn.

Kankaanpaa's Rehabilition Center is near and offers  you and groups many kinds of care and quality hotel services.

Nobleman Gustaf Wrede af Elima, better known as the Baron of Parkano, lived in Parkano by the Winter road of Kyronkangas. He worked in 1893 - 1918 as a cheaf forest supervisor in the local forest area of the state.

Wrede followed simple lifestyle and disguised himself as a countryman, often with a Vainamoinen's cap and a knapsack of birch-bark. Wrede admired military life and took part to the Protection Guard activity, so in older age he used this uniform. 

People were proud of their paron, Wrede was a popular guest in different activities and he got on well among lumbermen and farmers. His son Gosta Wrede worked as a correspondent and an actor in Hollywood.
 


Kankaanpaa is the place of fine arts. The Circle of Art consists near hundred statues and works around the city.

Art Institute of Kankaanpaa, a part of Satakunta University of Applied Sciences is a famous art school in Finland and one of the leading fine arts educators in Europe.

In Kankaanpaa situates also many architecturally interesting buildings. A famous bogey near is Villa Mairea in Noormarkku, designed by Alvar Aalto. 

In the art school's gallery there are constantly exhibitions and often also in the local Art Association's gallery. In the Kankaanpaa city museum in Niinisalo is a continual exhibition, which presents cubistic and abstract works of professor Kauko Raike and Sinikka Raike from the Raike Collection.
